Summer String Camp, 2016

Summer String Camp, 2016

We are excited to be offering a String Camp the week of July 25-29.  Camp meets from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. daily.  We are partnering with The Alberta School of Performing Arts to bring you a new summer string experience! The week culminates with a Friday afternoon performance (4:00 p.m.) by the Summer Strings Orchestra & Chamber Music Mentors on The Alberta School of Performing Arts stage. Physical Address: 2700 University Blvd E, Tuscaloosa 35404. Please use the entrance off of University just across from the Piggly Wiggly store.

Non-refundable deposit of $40 or payment in full due by July 15 for all students enrolling. (remaining tuition paid in full by July 22)

Camp Options Include…

Beginning Violin Class Component: Cost $110 (cancelled due to low enrollment)

For elementary – middle school aged students who have no prior experience playing violin. Students will have daily group instruction on the violin, be introduced to basic note reading and be inspired by hearing their teachers and guest artists demonstrate the violin. Space is limited in this class. Call the office, 348-6741, regarding availability of violins for this class.

Summer String Orchestra Component: Cost $110 (still available)

For elementary – middle school aged students who already play a string instrument, this camp will improve your ensemble and music reading skills by playing daily in an orchestra. You’ll be inspired by attending masterclasses by guest artists from the School of Music, and more. Students in Summer String Orchestra must be able to read music on all four strings and play in several keys. Experience with shifting and playing outside of first position is a plus, but not necessary. Teacher recommendation required (see pdf form below for teacher recommendation form). More experienced (mentor) student musicians will anchor each section.

Mentorship & Chamber Music Component for Select Middle or High School Students:  Cost $60 (still available)

More experienced string students in middle and high school may enroll (by permission) in this camp. A select group of more advanced string students will serve as the leaders of each orchestra section, will rehearse in a chamber group (trio or quartet) daily, and will perform on the final concert. Contact Dr. Jane Weigel if you are interested in being a mentor for String Camp.
