Campus Orchestra

Campus Orchestra is comprised of UA college students of all degree areas, UA music minors, advanced level pre-college musicians and post-college adults. Participation and seating is by audition. The ensemble meets Mondays from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in room 204 (IRR) of Moody Music Building and performs one concert per semester. The ensemble is under leadership of School of Music faculty member(s) and is conducted by a doctoral conducting major, currently, Mr. Anthony DiMauro.

Spring, 2024: Campus Orchestra will hold auditions for open chairs evenings of January 16 & 17.

Audition Spring 2024 repertoire will consist of the following:

• Two contrasting solo pieces or etudes which demonstrate your technical and lyrical proficiency.
• Major scales may be requested at the discretion of the conductor. Sight reading may also be requested.

Winds/Brass/Percussion:  Two excerpts (your choice) from the UA Large Ensemble audition list. Orchestral excerpts are preferred. Excerpts linked here: https://music.ua.edu/ensemble-auditions/

ENROLLMENT:

Once you have auditioned and are admitted to the ensemble, you must enroll to participate.

UA students and Early College students can register for the course: MUA 169 “Chamber Music” (section 005 for 1-credit, 006 for 0-credit).

If you are NOT enrolling for either of the above, you will need to register through the CMS site (or RYZER if a minor who is not in Early College. Questions regarding RYZER or CMS site enrollment should be directed to Dr. Jane Weigel, jweigel@ua.edu

Pre-college string students who do not audition to the level of Campus Orchestra may enroll in Junior Strings (a coached/conducted string ensemble for pre-college students), OR participate in a professionally coached chamber music ensemble where they can hone their ensemble skills. We anticipate needing this instrumentation for campus orchestra:
  • 3 Flutes (one on piccolo)
  • 2 Oboes
  • 2 Clarinets
  • Bass Clarinet
  • 2 Bassoon
  • 4 Horns
  • 3 Trumpets
  • 3 Trombones (one on bass)
  • 1 Tuba
  • 4-6 Percussion

Concert

Spring, 2024 concert will be held in Moody Music Building on Monday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Campus Orchestra concerts occur in the Moody Music Building (810  2nd Ave., UA Campus) at 7:30 p.m. Admittance is free and children are welcome! These concerts are live-streamed to allow friends and family outside West Alabama access to the performance. Just go to the music website and select the streaming link.
